Johns Island
Johns Island, SC is actually one of the largest islands in the US. It’s the fourth largest island on the east coast – surpassed only by Long Island, Mount Desert Island and Martha’s Vineyard. One of the most well-known attractions on Johns Island is the famous Angel Oak Tree. Estimated to be 400-500 years old, this massive oak measures its longest branch at 187 ft. from tip to tip.
There is a strong community atmosphere on the island and a love for a more laid-back way of living. You can kick back and relax at Low Tide Brewing Company and try one of their custom craft beers made right here on Johns Island; or you can grab a bite to eat and play some corn hole at Tattooed Moose on Maybank Highway. On Saturdays the local farmers market offers fresh produce, local eats and live music. Located nearby to Maybank and Main Roads – many of the vendors have farms located on Johns Island.
Some of Charleston’s best restaurants are located here as well, like Wild Olive and Fat Hen. Upscale shopping and dining can be found at nearby Freshfields Village and Bohicket Marina. If you want to drive a little further onto adjacent Wadmalaw Island you can explore a beautiful vineyard (Deep Water Vineyard) or even check out a tea plantation (Charleston Tea Plantation).
Bounded by the Stono River on one side, Bohicket Creek on the other, and the Kiawah River on the eastern edge, there is plenty of access to deepwater all around Johns Island, but there are several small lakes on the island as well. One lesser known spot is a lake that is open to the public called Trophy Lakes. It’s been a water sports destination since 1988 and offers private water ski and wakeboard lessons. You can even rent the lake for a family day!
I love the oak lined roads that greet you as you enter onto the island giving you the feeling that you just entered into a Nicholas Sparks movie. Guess that’s why they filmed parts of The Notebook here! With so much to do and see, don’t miss exploring this beautiful island for yourself – you may just fall in love with it and want to make it your home, too.
